Women in the Village
By Shoshie and Margaret
"There is a holocaust happening around the world to women--
you cannot say any longer you don't know."
-Oprah Winfrey.
Women are mistreated all over the world. Just because in America women have the same rights as men, doesn't mean that the global village is equal. This page talks about ways women have been mistreated. Here are some facts about the women in the global village.
Did you know?
Almost all of the water collected is retrieved by women?
More males are taught to read than females?
In Brazil a man can kill his wife for having an affair with another man?
Muslim women are not allowed to show their hair?
There is not a single country in the global village in which women, but not men, have the right to vote?
Many countries do not give women ownership rights?
This is a graph that represents more facts about women.

1. Women bear 100% of the worlds children. Yes, this is sort of obvious, but it is true!
2. Women comprise 50% of the worlds population.
3. Women grow 50% of the worlds food.
4. Women perform 60% of the worlds work.
5. Women earn 10% of the worlds income.
6. Women own 1%of the worlds property.

Women are traditionally the farmers and nannies. The underpaid, hardworking, employees. And yet, women are often treated like second class citizens in legal, social, and physical terms. Women in many countries are not a concern to their families. Their health and education is considered irrelevant to family life. To the family, it is more important that they marry early and have the maximum amount of children.
The 17-hour day
Women in Africa have a 17 hour day. They wake up at 4:45 and go to bed at 9:00. Their day involves eating breakfast, working in the fields, gathering water, having dinner, and washing the dishes and the kids. Imagine that you are woman of 20, you have 3 kids and a baby on the way, and you have to wake up at 4:45 AM to go work in the fields all day. I wouldn't do that! But that is exactly what they do, and so when your mom or dad tells you to clean your room, think of the women in Africa, and clean your room, because you are much better off here in America cleaning your room. And that brings us to another problem (or gift, depending on how you look at it). Cleaning your room. You probably have toys, books, and clothes littering your room. Maybe even some lost homework. People in Africa, Asia, and other places may not have toys. So, you are really lucky, and if you don't want to clean your room, just put your toys away after you are finished playing with them.

Religion and Child Bearing
Religion can have a large affect on birth control. For instance, Roman Catholisism discourages birth control. Hinduism and Buddism encourage large families.
Suffrage
Suffrage means the right to vote. Throughout the Global Village, in many countries, women are denied this right. There are some countries where men are not allowed to vote either. There are some countries where women and men are treated as equal beings, such as in Europe. However, you will not find a single country in the global village that gives women, but not men the right to vote- not that we want men to be discriminated against. We just wonder why men are considered to be so superior to women in the global village. The first country in which women gained the right to vote was New Zealand. Iraq recently gave women the right to vote. Do you think that women should have the right to vote?
Education
Did you know that 46% of women have no access to primary education? 1 out of 4 adults cannot read. 2/3 of these are women. Men are more likely to be educated than women. It seems that in many countries it is thought that all women are needed for is having babies and caring for their young children. They are, however, acknowledged for farming. Did you know that education for women could cut the population growth? This is because women would know about birth control and that they should not have babies at a very young age.
Income Rights
Many times women do a lot of the field work. However, it is the husband who receives the income. The right to receive money that you earned from working is called income rights. Women do 60% of the global village's work but only receive 10% of the villages income.
Physical Rights
Women are often not allowed to participate in various physical activities in some areas of the world such as sports, mechanical operation, and many jobs. This is unfair because women should be treated like they have the same physical abilities of men. It is true that the average man is minutely stronger and taller than the average woman. However, that does not mean that women should have less opportunities.
"I do not believe that women are better than men. We have not wrecked railroads, nor corrupted legislature, nor done many unholy things that men have done; but then we must remember that have not had the chance,"-Jane Addams

Shoshie, I disagree, I don't think that it was entirely the men's fault. Many women were disgusted by the thought of women doing a job of a man. It was mostly just how people were raised. Their father, their father's father, their father's father's father had all grown up to lead a family. It was the same with the women, only that they just wanted to grow up and have children. For a lot of people the question, "what do you want to be when you grow up", meant nothing. Especially for women. While the men were busy working so that they could become whatever their father was, all of the girls were dreaming about marrying a rich man and having 32 children. It was how they grew up.

Ellie, I have to agree with you. Some women thought that women shouldn't have rights, but still, you can't say that our page is biased because our assignment was WOMEN IN THE VILLAGE.
Maggie-May said

Still, some women always wanted to have rights, and in many countries, women still want them. And, if you had to say someone was at fault it would be the men.

You never talked about child bearing restrictions in the paragraph titled 'Religion and Child Bearing.' I agree with Ellie; the men are not always to blame. Many women sat back and let it continue. If you had to blame someone (or something) it would be the past human culture of both men and women. You need to just double check that there are no spelling or grammar errors.

I agree with the long comment Bennett wrote. It's not the men to actually blame. Maybe you could change the picture on the bottom to something different? I mean, men or young men can be of qulity and respect women's equality, but they may not be so obsessed about it because they may think that men and women are totally equal. If you could change the picture to something else maybe a picture explaining how equal each gender is, that may be a little more related.
Jiyu said

I meant to say:
1. quality
2. explaining how much freedom each gender has.

I thought that your page was o.k. I think that you can improve a lot on the content. In other words, some of the comments are excessive while others lack info. Do you have any graphs or maps that would liven up the page? That would help. Good luck!

It's important that people in this world know that women aren't always treated very fairly. And I'm not the one to say that they're not. But you must remember that not all men think this way. And it is true that men of quality respect women's equality, but that they do not talk about it or express it because they simply think that both genders are equal, and they fear that saying this to many times may portray that they believe that women are better, which is not true, as they are equal. Get it?

I believe everything that is on this page, and I think women are equal to men, no doubt about it. But I find that quote at the bottom very insulting.

Muslim women are not allowed to show their hair?
Is this correct? "ALL" Muslim women? Are they really "not allowed"?? by whom? Check for facts.
In fact, many of the statements you make on this page are not backed up by more information or sources of this information. This makes it appear more opinion than truth.

Ok, I haven't responded in a long time, so I will respond to each of you in order from the top of the page:
To Bennett: Yes, women were part of the problem, but if you had to blame either women or men it would be men. I have to say that men gave rights to women in countries where they do have rights. I will fix that. I checked the grammar.
To Bennett: What are you talking about.
To Ni'am: OOOOOOOK!
To Shoshie the Shoshie monster: I agree.
To Jiyu: It is not saying that men have to be totally obbsessed with women's rights to be men of quality, just that MEN SHOULD RESPECT AND REALIZE THAT WOMEN DESERVE ANYTHING THAT MEN DO! I think that thta is what it means.
To Jiyu: But the fact is the freddoms aren't equal.
To Rachel: What do you mean? We have graphs, pics, and animations.
To Health Team, the snack that kills: same to you as jiyu. but i can see what you mean. guys have the right to not talk about WRs, but if they do talk about women's rights it should be in favor.
To the health team, the snack that kills: if you mean the one by jane addams, she is actually complimenting men, I mean those things can be considered good, as it is a matter of opinion.
To Andrea Bittle: No but in general. Most things are that way. By their religion or husbands. We have sources for everything we've written.

no offense, but it doesn't sound like you read to pic very carefully. it says :
Men of quality RESPECT women's equality.
not
Men of quality ARE CRAZY FANATICS OF AND WILDLY SUPPORT women's equality. If you always say, oh someone in the world may not interpret this right you'll spend your whole life silent.

I disagree.... Anyway, forget what I said and read over your page. There is a point in which you say 'women are not aloud to take part in various physical activities such as sports, ....' I don't like that sentence because that is not necessarily true in some parts of the world, like North America. And besides, you and I play sports, does that mean we're not girls??
Andrea Bittle said
at 3:52 pm on Apr 18, 2008
When I was your age, girls were not allowed to play sports. My brothers played baseball, ran track, and participated in a lot of "boy activities." Girls could be cheerleaders! I am not kidding. Only when I graduated high school did that change. Boy am I old!

When we did this page we new that it would be controversial. I must admit that things are better for women. However, you can not say that, globally, women are equal. "I cannot say that women are better than men, but I can say that they are no worse," Oprah Winfrey
