“Pollution is the forerunner of perdition”
This page is about the pollution of the world. As you saw on the FrontPage, this project is based on the book If The World Were A Village by David J. Smith. In this book, the world is reduced to a village of 100 people, with one person equalling about 64 million people. This is done to make numbers easier to comprehend, and make percentages easier to understand. Therefore, with so many people in the real world, compared to the Global Village, the numbers have to be rounded, to make them work in the Global Village. In this Wiki, we aim to go over and above the data in the book. ~ Pete and Katherine
Home, Sweet, Home
Our planet the earth is are home and we only have one. In order to keep it healthy we have respect the earth. Factories, cars, household items, etc. all pollute the Earth. Almost everthing you do pollutes the world: playing computer, cooking food, and turning on the air conditioner. You can either keep on hurting the earth or you could try to help fix it!
Maybe you're thinking "who cares? One person won't make the difference." But if everyone in the world thought that it would make a huge difference we could really change the world. Think about that.
Air
Air is a very important part of the earth. Everything living needs air, humans, plants and animals. We have a limited supply of clean air, and we need to conserve it for future generations. We have a limited supply of clean air because we are spurting CO2 into the air. Air pollution can cause smog and acid rain. Air pollution also clogs up our lunges and makes it difficult to breathe. Because of air pollution 1 in 1000 are at risk of getting cancer. Also because of air pollution, 7% of the population has asthma. Many people think of factories and how badly they pollute the air, but the truth is, you pollute also. Just by driving to and from work you pollute much of the air in between your house and your job. Actually, you pollute the air above, around, and in your house when you aren't home. Your fridge and other constant appliances like your heater are always polluting and we couldn't survive without them. Our air quality is vital we must conserve it.

The Value of Trees
Trees help us in many ways: they give us shade when we are hot, they absorb Co2 and give us oxygen, they give us clean air and water, trees are homes to animals, and they protect good soil from eroding and washing away. But yet every year 27 to 28 million (about the size Pennsylvania) are cut down to more farmland and obtain wood for fuel. The more people, the more the demand for wood.
We rely on forests to live. We use so many products of their wood such as: beds, tables, chairs, we even walk on floors made of their wood. We eat the fruit of their branches. So how can we be so cruel to them?
This is one of the reasons for Global Warming. The more trees we cut down the less Co2 they can absorb. If we cut down a tree we should at least plant a new one in its place. Still it takes only a few seconds to cut down a tree where it takes years for another tree to fully grow. It is sad thinking we could be so wasteful. When the Native Americans killed a buffalo they used every part from the skin to the internal organs in some way. We should use trees in the same way. But the thing is we are so updated in everything that we do not need all the materials of a tree.
Water
You probably think that our water is infinite, you just turn the tap and water comes gushing out. No, our water supply is very limited, we don’t have nearly as much as we think. Even though we have so little water, we do not have a good enough water system. Twenty countries are already suffer from water shortages. It is predicted by 2050, 13 to 20 percent of the world will be in a severe water shortage. People in America, get their daily share of water from three different sources, there surfaces of water masses, like lakes and streams, and groundwater. Half of our water supply comes from groundwater. Our population can grow largely but our water sources cannot so even if we have 5 times as many people as we do now the water sources will not grow for our needs. 1.3 people currently lack safe access to water.
Humans are not the only ones who need water. Animals drink water too. how should animals know if water is polluted. Sometimes they won't know. So they might drink water and get sick or die. Have you ever seen movies where people pollute the water and then the water turns green, black, or worse? This is a bit of an exaggeration but that is a bit of what happens to the water we pollute. Some families can't afford clean water so they get it from rivers or streams. These may be unsafe water sources so these people can get sick. For instance if it has waste in it and drink it you could get diseases like cholera and giardia.
Reduce, Reuse, And Recycle!
On average a person in the United States throws away four pound of trash a day. Garbage is sent to landfills, burned, or even dumped in the ocean. When our trash is sent to landfills, trash like food scraps decomposes, but some like Styrofoam, last thousand of years. In order to help the planet, we should buy less, reuse more and recycle. Otherwise we are stuck with trash that won’t go away. To reduce your trash, you can compost your natural food, or try to eat all the food on your plate. And if your parents make to much too much food, take some of it for lunch tomorrow. You can reuse those cans and that paper towel you threw away, by recycleing. When you recycle, you send it to a place were they turn your recyclning into a new product. If you reduce, reuse and recycle, you can really help our planet.

Yeah, I like the page. What I really despise, is that everyone thinks, "Gee, I'm just one person, who cares if I throw one piece of trash on the ground?" Well the truth is, Mother Nature cares! If everyone in the world thought that they could pollute just this once, well one piece of trash for everyone on earth would be over 6 million pieces of junk. Potato.

Hi. The graph on "Water" is about access to clean water vs. no access to clean water. This means a percentage of people are drinking dirty, polluted, germy water. Please rewrite your comment under water.
Also, you need to research air, water, and land pollution. this is a big topic. i think you need some partners to help. any volunteers?

Amos I think we said that trees protect topsoil from eroding. If soil erodes it can go into the water and then the water is not clear anymore

Peet when you were correcting us about grammer you spelled "to, t" and it had a lot of mistakes. It was hipocritic. Please don't correct us about silly things like that we are still in editing process. But if you made a thoughtful comment I would be happy to take it.

I think that you made it very apparent that pollution is hurting our Earth; good job! You do, however, need to check grammar and spelling. I think that it would look a lot better if you would make sure that everything is aligned correctly. Maybe you should add something about how to be more conservative and better for the environment. I mean, you explained that you should help the environment (Reduce, Reuse, and Recycle) but you don't really give some examples of how to be 'green.' By the way, I love the Reduce, Reuse, and Recycle!

We like your attitude towards this topic. You act like you really care. However, everyone already knows that they can make a difference, but you have to tell them why they want to help. For instance, kill the earth, you kill yourself. Earth is our only resource. Some grammar errors. Overall, really cool.

Okay, let's start with a very important topic: check your spelling! If your spelling is incorrect, your grammar could be off. I really like your you Reduce, Reuse, and Recycle because it gives you facts and tips. I truly like this page. But, the spelling and grammar have a big impact on your page.

Guys, did you look up the meaning of perdition? Please look up this word in the dictionary. Where did you get this quote?

I don't think that quote should be used. The phrase is appropriate, but the meaning is VERY inappropriate. Perdition means hell and everlasting damnation. Whoever did this article should have looked up perdition in a dictionary!!
