Nationalities
By Shelby, May, Na'im, Rohan and Cole
This is a map of the world.

This page is about the nationalites of the world. As you saw on the FrontPage, this project is based on the book If The World Were A Village by David J. Smith. In this book, the world is reduced to a village of 100 people, with one person equalling about 64 million people. This is done to make numbers easier to comprehend, and make percentages easier to understand. Therefore, with so many people in the real world, compared to the Global Village, the numbers have to be rounded, to make them work in the Global Village. In this Wiki, we aim to go over and above the data in the book. ~ Pete and Katherine

Different Countries

There are a lot of countries in the global village. The top 10 countries where there is a large population are China, India, USA, Indonesia, Brazil, Pakistan, Russia, Bangladesh, Japan, and Nigeria.

China - 21 people are from China in the Global Village
China is the most populated country in the global village. One out of every 5 people (in the real world, not the global village) are Chinese. Unfortunately, China does not have enough land to support its large and still growing population. This causes overpopulation. That is why there are laws in China about how many babies a woman can have (see Population page). China's main product is rice. Rice is grown in water covered fields called patts or rice patties. Western China is mostly mountains, including the Himalaya, Tian, and Pamir Ranges. Western China also consists of a huge desert. Central China mostly consists of mountains. One-fifth of Chinese citizens are farmers. Many years ago families would live in a compound farm ownership. That means that they would share the land with other families. Each family was assigned to a compound. The purpose of compounds was to help families live even if they did not have a farm of their own. Compounds no longer exist. The government of China is currently a Communist government (see Government). This means that everyone has the same amount of money and the lives of the people are controlled completely by the government. There are three main religions: Confucianism, Daoism, and Buddhism (see Global Religions). Western China is dominated by mountains, while eastern China is more of a mix of deserts, rivers, and crop land.

India -17 people are from India

The highest mountain range in the world is the Himalayas. These towering mountains form a wall, separating northern India from the rest of Asia. In the North-western corner of India is the Thar Desert. India is actually an enormous peninsula with the Arabian Sea on the west, the Bay of Bengal on the East, and the Indian Ocean on the south. This country contains many environments from tropical jungles to deserted wastelands. India consist of three main geographic areas: The Himalayan Region, the Indo-Gangetic Plane, and separted from the plane by the Vindhya Mountains, the Deccan Plateau Region which is surrounded by sea-side Mountains called the Eastern and Western Ghats. India is a major trade center, previously the manufacturing center for the well known company GAP, one of the many textile companies operating in India. It is conveniently placed for shipping trade to various countries around the world because most of the border is exposed to the Indian Ocean. The current government is Federal Government. The main religion is Buddhism. The currency is rupees.

Indonesia is a grouping of small islands between Australia and Asia. Indonesia is part of an area called the Ring of Fire. There are about 400 volcanos, 100 of which are active. There are five primary islands called the Sumatra, Java/Madora, Kalimantan, Sulawesi, and Irian Jaya islands and 30 groups of smaller islands. It separates the Indian and the Pacific Ocean. 81% of the country is the sea. When the people of Indonesia were given freedom the government had to make laws about oversea trade. However, Indonesia is still a trading country. Some of there trading products are tender, oil, fuel, and minerals they got from mining. Indonesia's government is a republic. Pakistan - 3 people are from Pakistan

Pakistan is a country on the western side of India. The unemployment rate there is horrendous: 7.5%! That is bad. The GDP per capita isn't so good either: $2,600. 24% of the population are under the population line. Their government is a Federal Republic. It's area is a whopping 803,940 sq.km. That is not large, but it is bigger than Bangladesh. It's coastline is 1,046 km. long. Most of the population(97%) are Muslim and follow that religion. Only 3% are something else.

Russia - 2 people are from Russia

Russia is the biggest country in the world. It is about 1.8 times the size of the U.S. The land size of the country is 16,995,800 sqare kilometers. As you can see, this is a very big country. It is part of both Euope and Asia!

It is a very industrialized country. The literacy rate is 99.4, very good. The unemploment rate is 5.9. This is higher than the U.S. but still it is not bad. The government type is a rebublic (see Government).

If Russia is so big, why do only two people in the Global Village come from there? The reason for this is the amount of arable land. Arable land is land you can farm and grow crops. Most of the land in Russia is either too cold or too dry. In fact, the percentage of arable land in Russia is 7.17 percent. That is why the population of Russia is so low.

Nigeria is located in Western Africa, on the Gulf of Guinea. Its location makes it convenient for trade with Europe, The United States, and other African countries. Who's Tabbol???? Anyway, I agree with Shoshie. And also, the graph is like a little bit blurry. I didn't know Margaret was working on it? Anyway, I think with Margaret's help, the Nationalities page is really working it's way up the *wiki chain*!

You all are working hard! I really like how you choose the same type of info to tell about the countries. Super work....

Andrea Bittle said

Oh, and also, you should strongly consider resizing your main nationalities graph. It does not need to be nearly so large and it would be nice if the sidebar could fit next to it. I've heard if you copied the graph into word you can make it a jpg file and it might not be as blurry.

Fine. You like this name better? My comments are bnot crazy, they're helpful. My typing is just bad. To Nationalities - take out the 1 at the top of yor page. And redo the graph. You need to take another screenshot of it. It happened to our group too. There is a 'CHART AREA' tab floating in he left top corner. P.AS. brian, my name was The Languages Dude (Peet). Ha.

I think you need a map of the world

Jiyu said

at 7:34 pm on Mar 4, 2008

I think this page is great, but maybe instead of only Asian flags, maybe Australia's, or maybe even a country in Africa! It's great how you showed the flags, but some people don't even know what the Congo's flag looks like! Maybe even Malawi! So, you guys should really try to add a flag that is not well known.

I got on at home and my dad noticed some errors. Chinia's greatest product isn't rice any more. I fixed the rest

Andrea Bittle said

Wow! What a lot of work you guys did on this page. I am so impressed. you choose certain topics to feature about each country. I do have a couple of questions. India - you said the main religion is Buddhism. Could you check this? I thought it was Hinduism as well as Buddhism. Also, for Bangladesh, you said it's economy wasn't too bad, yet it's one of the poorest countries in the world! Pakistan - you might mention its extremely high illiteracy rate.
All countries need careful editing for grammar and check your facts! Great work!

I am very impressed with your collective work!! I am curious: did you have just one source for most information, or did you check each fact with two or more sources? I find in my work that sometimes a well-intended source has errors, so a quick check elsewhere can help ensure accuracy. Keep having fun!
